Looking for skaters!

Looking for skaters!

After a very successful season 8, the Cedar Valley Push-Up Brawlers Roller Derby team is gearing up for their next home season. The team is looking for potential skaters and referees to be a part of this fun, competitive team.

An informational recruitment meeting will be Sunday, August 26 at 4:00 pm at Gateway Park in Cedar Falls. This meeting will be an opportunity for those interested in joining the team to learn how the training process is conducted, meet teammates and ask questions, and have the opportunity to practice skating. Attendees who presently own skates are encouraged to bring them. People are also invited to stop by the Brawlers tent at Cedar Valley Pridefest on Saturday, August 25 and watch a demo bout at the main stage at 5:15 pm.

Anyone who identifies as female and is 18 years or older are encouraged and allowed to skate with the Brawlers, though anyone over 18 may train to be a part of the referee crew or non-skating officials. The league also has a junior team, the MadCatters, who will be starting their next session soon for those who are interested in the sport but are underage. Their recruitment meeting is Sunday, August 26 at 1:00 pm.

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the governing body of the sport, presently has the Brawlers ranked 172 worldwide.

This game will also be a double header with the Cedar Valley Junior Roller Derby team, the Mad Catters, also playing their debut game at home. The team will play against Derby Devils Junior Roller Derby (Osage, IA). The junior team game begins at 3:30.

Tickets are available in advance at Mohair Pear, Waterloo Bicycle Works, Cedar Valley Chiropractic, and the teams for $10 or for $12 at the door.

Back to Practice

Back to Practice

After several months off from their challenging Season 7, the Brawlers are back to practice. Having the opportunity to skate in several of their favorite gyms and local business such as the Black Hawk County YMCA in Waterloo and Gym 24 in Waverly, the team is working on getting their skate legs back under them.

But the off-season hasn’t been a break for everyone. The team has brought on a few new recruits since we last saw them in June. These new skaters have been learning the fundamentals of skating and the rules of the game, with the hope of being ready for their veteran teammates to come back from a well-deserved rest. Coach Flash, Captain Dani Debeato, and the rest of the Brawlers are gearing up for a tough Season 8 full of new challenges and new opportunities.
